Winter is the season of long chilly nights and frosty daytime hours. The countryside becomes a winter wonderland when fresh snowfall decorates the trees and bundles the farmsteads. The crunch and snap under snow shoed feet, the swoosh of skis on a cross country trail, or children’s laughter at snow time play are future vacation memories.
Many of the up-east towns have outdoor skating rinks centrally located and equipped with rustic wood-stoved warming shacks. Sleigh rides are also available and winter festivals are fun for everyone. Downhill skiing and snowboarding are available at nearby Jay Peak and Burke Mountain. VAST (Vermont Association of Snowmobile Trails) has a network of trails throughout the area and places to stop along the way for hot chocolate and a warm-up.
